Home Renovations Can Lead to Energy Savings

If you’re looking at increasing the energy efficiency of your home, you may first start with light bulbs and ENEGY STAR® rated appliances. However, the best place to start is actually outside your home. Your roofing system and siding could be a leading cause of energy loss. If you haven’t looked at how energy efficient your siding and roofing are, you’re missing out on savings.

Energy Efficient Siding

Home Renovations Can Lead to Energy Savings

Your home exterior can be a huge source of heat loss. This is especially true if your home was built more than a decade ago. New building codes require greater energy efficiency throughout the home, including the siding. Although some siding manufacturers include insulation in their products, not all do. However, you can make any brand or material energy efficient siding with a whole home insulative house wrap. Talk to your siding company about their recommendations if you’re replacing your siding.

Your Roofing System

There are several ways to increase the energy efficiency of your roofing. First is to look at the insulation in your attic. If you missed our previous blogs about insulation, click here to learn how to check yours. Next, you can choose an ENERGY STAR rated roofing product. If you plan on replacing your roof with new asphalt shingles, consider a cool roofing product like the Timberline® CS shingles from GAF. These will reduce the temperature in your attic which will save you on your cooling costs, something especially helpful over our hot and often long summers in Tennessee.
