Do You Have a Chimney Leak or a Roof Leak?

We’ve said it before, water follows the path of least resistance. That often means that the water getting into your home may not be coming in from right above the location of the roof leak. In fact, it may not be coming from your roof at all, you may have a chimney leak.

Why Your Chimney May be Leaking

Do You Have a Chimney Leak or a Roof Leak?

Although your chimney is only a small part of your roof’s surface, it is a big culprit in water damage issues. That’s because it (along with all roof protrusions) is a point of weakness on your roof. Here are some ways water can get into your home through and around your chimney:

  • Flashing – This is perhaps the most common reason you may have a roof leak. The flashing around the chimney needs resealing from time to time. If yours hasn’t been resealed, you may end up with what appears to be a chimney leak but is really part of your roofing system.
  • Chimney cap – Your chimney cap provides protection from both water and pests. However, over time it may need to be replaced. If water is coming into your fireplace, you may need your chimney cap replaced.
  • Mortar issues – The mortar around your bricks helps protect your chimney. When it gets a small crack, water gets in and we have a freeze thaw cycle, the crack grows. Once the crack goes through the entire brick to the chimney, you’re at risk for a chimney leak.

These are just a few reasons to perform your own roofing inspection several times a year. You will notice changes to your roof and chimney and call a roofing company before you have water damage in your home.
