Gutters
Seamless gutters and gutter guards that move water off your home
Seamless gutters and gutter guards, sized for Tennessee rain. Our standard is a 6-inch gutter with downspouts placed where the water actually needs to go.
Recent gutter jobs
Project galleryA roof can be perfect and still send water where it does damage if the gutters are too small, pitched wrong or clogged with leaves. Mobley Brothers Roofing & Renovation has installed gutters on homes across East and Middle Tennessee since 2007, from our Knoxville office in Hardin Valley and our Lebanon office, usually as part of a roofing relationship that lasts for years.
We keep it practical. Our gutter foreman looks at the house, points out any problems with fascia, soffit or drainage right then, and quotes the job from what he sees. You get seamless gutters that fit the house, gutter guards if your trees call for them, and a crew that protects your property while they work.
Seamless gutters built for the way your house sheds water
Seamless gutters are formed in one continuous run for each side of the house, so there are no joints along the length where leaks and drips usually start. The only seams are at the corners and the downspout outlets, which is where we pay the most attention when we hang them.
Getting the gutter right is only half the job. The other half is enough downspouts in the right spots. A long run with one downspout will overflow in a hard rain no matter how big the gutter is. We plan the downspouts around how the roof drains and where you want the water to go, away from the foundation, walkways and flower beds.
Gutters also depend on what they hang from. If the fascia board behind an old gutter is rotted, a new gutter will pull loose. We check the fascia and soffit before we install and tell you if they need repair first, and we can wrap fascia and soffit in aluminum so there is less wood to rot.

Why 6-inch gutters are our standard
You can sell someone a 4-inch gutter, but as David Mobley says, around here that is close to useless. A 6-inch gutter holds the right amount of water for the heavy rains we get in both East and Middle Tennessee, and it is our standard on nearly every house. The only time we step down to 5-inch is when an older home has a clearance problem, such as a porch or roof edge where a 6-inch gutter physically will not fit.
The price difference between a 5-inch and a 6-inch gutter is small compared to the protection. Mike Mobley still remembers the adjuster at his own home appraisal pointing out his oversized gutters as something that adds value to a house. Bigger gutters with more downspouts overflow less, clog less, and keep more water away from your foundation and siding.
| Size | When we use it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 6-inch | Our standard on nearly every home | Holds the volume of a hard Tennessee rain and pairs with larger downspouts |
| 5-inch | Only where clearance will not allow 6-inch, often on older homes | Fits tight spots such as a gutter running across a porch apron |
| 4-inch | We do not recommend it | Too small for the rain we get; it overflows |
Gutter guards that keep water moving
Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter so leaves, twigs and pine needles stay out while water still gets in. If you have trees near the house, guards can save you from climbing a ladder several times a year and from the overflow that happens when a gutter fills with debris.
Clogged gutters cause more than overflow. Leaves that sit and rot in a gutter hold water against the fascia, and debris that backs up onto the roof rots around pipe boots and in valleys, where it can start a leak. That is why we talk about gutter guards when we talk about roof maintenance.
We install gutter guards on new gutters and can add them to existing gutters that are in good shape. We will be straight with you about whether your gutters are worth guarding or should be replaced first, and about which kind of guard makes sense for the trees around your house.

Signs your gutters need attention
- Water spilling over the front of the gutter in a hard rain
- Gutters sagging or pulling away from the roofline
- Rot, stains or peeling paint on the fascia behind the gutter
- Water pooling or soil washing out near the foundation
- Downspouts that dump water against the house or onto a walkway
- Plants or debris growing in the gutter
- Seams and corners that drip after the rain stops
Gutter installation and replacement: what to expect
- 01
A look at the house
Our gutter foreman walks the house, checks the fascia, soffit and roof edge, and brings up any issues right then. We quote the job from what he sees, not from a guess over the phone.
- 02
A clear proposal
You get a written quote that covers gutter size, color, downspouts and any fascia or soffit work. If you ask for an itemized list, we will give you one.
- 03
Removal and repair
We take down the old gutters carefully, repair or wrap fascia and soffit where needed, and get the roof edge ready to hold the new system.
- 04
Seamless installation and cleanup
We hang the new seamless gutters with the right slope, set the downspouts, add gutter guards if you chose them, and clean up before we leave. On roofing jobs we use ladder stands and gutter protectors so ladders never lean on your gutters.

Gutter installation and gutter replacement in Knoxville, TN
In East Tennessee, our Knoxville roofers handle gutters as installation and replacement work, often alongside a roof. Recent jobs from the Knoxville office include installing new 6-inch gutters in Maryville and in Oak Ridge, a roof and gutter replacement in Lenoir City, storm damage repair with a gutter installation in Knoxville, and a new roof with gutter replacement in Strawberry Plains, where the job also included vinyl siding, soffit and oversized seamless gutters.
If you are in Knoxville, Hardin Valley, Farragut, Oak Ridge or anywhere else the Knoxville office serves, call (865) 205-0800 for a free estimate on new gutters or a full gutter replacement.
New gutters with a new roof
If your roof is due for replacement, it is usually the right time to replace the gutters too. The old gutters often come down during the tear-off anyway, the fascia is exposed so we can repair it, and everything goes back up as one coordinated system. Many of our customers have us do the roof, gutters and siding together so the whole exterior works and looks like it belongs together.
If the roof still has years left, we will tell you. We would rather install your gutters now and be the company you call when the roof is ready than sell you a roof you do not need.

Questions homeowners ask
Straight answers, the way we would give them on your driveway. If yours is not here, call the office and ask.
More questions we get askedWhat size gutters do I need?
For most homes in East and Middle Tennessee, 6-inch gutters. They hold the volume of a hard rain far better than smaller gutters and pair with larger downspouts. We use 5-inch only where a clearance problem, usually on an older home, keeps a 6-inch gutter from fitting. We do not recommend 4-inch gutters; they are too small for the rain we get and tend to overflow.
Are seamless gutters better than sectional gutters?
Yes, for most homes. Seamless gutters are formed in one piece for each run, so there are no joints along the length to separate or drip. Sectional gutters have a seam every few feet, and each seam is a place for a leak to start as sealant ages. With seamless gutters, the only joints are at corners and downspout outlets.
Do gutter guards really work?
Gutter guards work well at keeping leaves and larger debris out while letting water in, which means fewer clogs and fewer trips up the ladder. They do not make gutters maintenance free; fine debris can still collect, and guards should be checked from time to time. If you have trees close to the house, gutter guards are usually worth it. We will tell you honestly if yours are not.
Can you add gutter guards to my existing gutters?
Often, yes. If your current gutters are the right size, pitched correctly and securely attached to sound fascia, we can add gutter guards to them. If the gutters are undersized, sagging or leaking at the seams, it usually makes more sense to replace them with 6-inch seamless gutters and guards at the same time. We will look first and explain which option we recommend.
Do you repair gutters, or only replace them?
We do both, from both offices. We repair leaking seams, loose or sagging sections and downspouts, and when the gutters are failing all over, we will quote a replacement that will outlast another patch.
What if the wood behind my gutters is rotten?
Rotted fascia needs to be fixed before new gutters go up, or the gutters will pull loose. Our gutter foreman checks the fascia and soffit when he looks at the house and includes any repair in the quote. We can replace damaged boards and wrap fascia and soffit in aluminum, which leaves less exposed wood to rot in the future.
Why do my gutters overflow even when they are clean?
Usually because the gutters are too small, there are not enough downspouts, or the gutter is not sloped toward the outlets. A long run draining to a single downspout can overflow in a heavy rain even when it is spotless. We size the gutters, place the downspouts where the roof actually drains, and set the slope so water moves instead of sitting.
