You can get complex and interesting results with a combination of two or more different siding materials and profiles, especially when you have a clear idea and a skilled siding installer who can execute it. But you need to carefully plan out your design when you decide to move forward with this project.
Choose Contrasting Colors
A typical exterior color palette consists of three contrasting colors, with the roofing usually being the main color that’s complemented by siding and trim. Adding a fourth color to the mix – perhaps, a fifth one if you’re up for the challenge – will highlight the different siding styles. Choosing the exact same color for all the siding would defeat the purpose of combining different types of siding. Individual, distinct shades of the same color can also be used to achieve the same effect.
Use Textures for Variety
As your local siding and roofing company, we strongly advise against choosing the same siding texture across different styles. Doing so can diminish its visual impact. Go for extreme textural contrasts like between wood shakes and vinyl clapboard siding. Extruded siding materials like vinyl and fiber cement are sold with different textures, styles and profiles. These options make it possible to achieve extreme textural contrasts within the same siding category. Installation won’t be as complicated, and you can benefit from similar life-spans and low-maintenance features.
Play With Different Profiles
Shifting siding profiles can add a multidimensional look to your home’s exterior. A popular multi-profile siding combination features wood shakes on the upper story complementing traditional clapboard-style siding on the first level. Other styles, such as fish scale siding, also provide a nice directional contrast.
You can plan your siding design in various ways. You can collect cutouts, you can sketch them on large sketchbooks, or you can use a photo editing app. Roofing and siding manufacturers also provide free design apps that let you virtually “install” different types of siding, though the selection may be limited to that particular manufacturer’s. When in doubt, a siding company can help you plan your project.
