Hail damage has been the subject of many insurance claims during summer season. Investing in durable roofing that can withstand hail damage requires less effort and repair work in the long run. In this blog, roofing company Mobley Brothers Roofing & Restoration shares a look at how the right roofing system helps reduce hailstorm damage.
Why Invest in a Durable Roofing System?
The International Building Code currently does specify required roofing materials for areas at risk of hail damage. This means the homeowner and/or roofing contractor gets to choose which roofing material is suitable for hail protection. It’s worth noting that that hail damage can take off as much as 10 years off a roof’s life span. On an average asphalt shingle roof, that would already be half of its expected life span.
If you’ve been on the receiving end of roofing damage, you already have an idea of how complicated insurance claims can get. While storm damage scenarios are often clear-cut situations, hail damage has so many gray areas that require thorough investigation from roofing contractors and insurance adjusters. It doesn’t help that hail damage is easily mistaken for asphalt shingle blisters. Also, if the insurance provider deems hail damage as merely “cosmetic” (as opposed to “functional” damage), disputes can delay your insurance claim.
Durable Roofing Systems
When planning your roof replacement, go over with your roofing contractor with the roofing system’s specifications. Roofing systems rated in UL 2218 or FM 4473, in either Class 3 or 4. These are standards for testing impact resistance, the conditions of which approximate conditions that happen during a hailstorm. Of all these tests, metal roofs has the best results, followed by slate and tile.
This doesn’t mean you should put asphalt shingles down for the count. Roofing manufacturers such as GAF offers asphalt shingles that are tested for impact protection. Their ArmorShield™ technology, featured on their popular products such as the Glenwood® and Timberline® architectural shingles. ArmorShield shingles have passed UL 2218, has Class A fire rating, and has StainGuard® protection that helps guard against unsightly blue-green algae.
