Like the other exterior components of your home, your gutter system must be given the utmost care and attention it deserves to ensure its year-round performance. After all, you wouldn’t want to encounter issues of water damage as a result of your gutters’ inefficiency.
In today’s article, Mobley Brothers Roofing and Renovation, one of the area’s top roofing contractors, offers these tips that will keep your gutters in good working condition all year.
Clean Your Gutters
This should be a part of your home maintenance to-do list this fall. Remove leaves, twigs, dirt and other debris that may have collected in the gutters. This ensures the continuous flow of water away from your property. Observe safety precautions when conducting this task, as well.
Stop Ice from Forming
It’s nearly impossible for any roofing company to overstress the importance of cleaning your gutter system. Then again, you shouldn’t just do it once. At the beginning of winter, make sure you clean it again. It could have accumulated the usual debris that may prevent water from flowing freely to your downspouts. Improper drainage can cause standing water to freeze. Ice can cause the gutter sections to crack or even pull away from their attachments.
Inspect for Leaks
Leaks occur when the outer part of your gutters start to drip water, especially at the joints that connect two gutter sections. To see if this is the case, flush the gutters with running water. Water should flow directly toward the downspout. If you see a leak or any small crack or hole around the gutters, patch it up with sealant. Faulty gutter sections, however, must be replaced with new ones.
